Tactical Trends: Technology Reclaims Leadership as Equity Price Breadth Lags
Relative breadth rebuilt faster than price at the close
At the close, equity leadership rotated back toward technology, US cyclicals, and Taiwan, yet price confirmation stayed thin across our ETF universe. Only 20 of 59 equity ETFs (34%, +5.1pp) held above their 20-day moving average, while 38 of 58 outperformed the S&P 500 SPY (66%, +8.6pp), leaving a -32pp gap. Emerging markets, China, and parts of developed ex-US still failed to confirm in price, so the equity tape remains a rotation-in-bear structure rather than a broad advance.
Fixed income weakened in quality even as a few prices recovered. Just 5 of 17 bond ETFs (29%, +5.9pp) held above their 20-day moving average, while only 7 of 16 outperformed the Aggregate Bonds AGG (44%, -6.2pp); high yield, EM debt, and munis led the relative data, but Treasuries and investment grade credit lost ground. That keeps bonds in a breadth trap led by spread products and short duration rather than a broad duration recovery.
Specialty stayed selective. Only 3 of 15 specialty ETFs (20%, +6.7pp) held above their 20-day moving average, while 7 of 15 outperformed the S&P 500 SPY (47%, unchanged), with semiconductors and momentum confirming on both price and relative terms as managed futures, covered-call equity, and REITs held defensive relative strength from below their own moving averages. Commodities did not print fresh signals in this session, and silver plus broad commodities still sit in the lagging cross-timescale camp, which leaves the real-asset specialty outside the current confirmation set.
20-Day Tactical Breadth

Key Takeaways
• Developed ex-US repair is still early. Developed Markets EFA and Japan EWJ crossed above their ratio moving averages versus S&P 500 SPY even though their 20-day relative returns stayed negative. Technology XLK and Nasdaq 100 QQQ paired ratio crosses with positive trailing relative performance, which marks genuine leadership rather than stabilization.
• Credit and duration are splitting inside fixed income. High Yield HYG crossed above its ratio moving average versus Aggregate Bonds AGG on a +0.45% 20-day relative move, and High Yield Bonds JNK crossed above its 20-day moving average despite a -0.21% 20-day return. Investment Grade Credit LQD and Short TIPS VTIP crossed below their ratio moving averages, which keeps leadership in spread products and shorter duration rather than in rate-sensitive credit.
• Semiconductors SMH crossed above its 20-day moving average on a +5.58% period return. SMH also crossed above its ratio moving average versus S&P 500 SPY on a +5.35% 20-day relative move. Managed Futures DBMF and Covered Calls Nasdaq JEPQ held relative leadership from below their own 20-day moving averages. No fresh commodity crosses interrupted the lagging cross-timescale read in silver and broad commodities.
