Tactical Trends: Specialty Rebound Outruns Relative Leadership

Four of 15 specialty ETFs beat SPY; biotech and bitcoin lead

As of July 6, 10 of 15 specialty ETFs (67%, +26.7pp) sit above their 20-day moving average (20D MA), while 4 of 15 (27%, -6.7pp) outperform the S&P 500 SPY above their 20-day ratio moving average vs SPY (20D ratio MA vs SPY). Biotech and Bitcoin Trust IBIT anchor the relative leaders. Gold, managed futures, covered-call equity, and REIT exposure recovered in price without matching benchmark leadership. Specialty participation is expanding faster than specialty leadership, and the 40pp price-relative gap marks a rebound concentrated in a small leadership core.

At the close, 16 of 17 bond ETFs sit above their 20D MA. Relative leaders vs Aggregate Bonds AGG come from EM debt, high yield, mortgages, munis, and intermediate Treasuries, while Global Bonds BNDX and long duration TLT lag the benchmark. The bond move is a price rebound concentrated in credit and intermediate duration.

Equity participation also sits high, with 50 of 59 ETFs above their 20D MA. Relative leaders vs the S&P 500 SPY come from low volatility, smaller US stocks, developed ex-US, and Asia-Pacific exposures such as Japan EWJ and Taiwan EWT. Commodities split, with Gold GLD back above its 20D MA and silver, oil, and broad commodity proxies in the cross-timescale laggard cluster. The cross-asset mix favors selective international and lower-volatility leadership, and US growth plus commodity beta sit outside the leading clusters.

Key Takeaways

Japan EWJ, Taiwan EWT, and Developed Markets VEA crossed above their 20D ratio MA versus S&P 500 SPY, while Quality Factor QUAL, Consumer Staples XLP, Utilities XLU, and Real Estate XLRE crossed below theirs. Equity cross-timescale alignment is 83%, and the relative winners center on Asia-Pacific equity, smaller US stocks, and value.

Mortgage-Backed MBB crossed above its 20D ratio MA versus Aggregate Bonds AGG, and Global Bonds BNDX crossed below its 20D ratio MA versus AGG. Fixed-income leadership favors EM debt, high yield, mortgages, munis, investment grade credit, and short duration. Long duration TLT is the sole persistent laggard.

Gold GLD, down 7.09% over the period, crossed above its 20-day moving average. Bitcoin Trust IBIT crossed above both its 20D MA and its 20D ratio MA versus S&P 500 SPY, while Real Estate VNQ and Global REITs REET crossed below their 20D ratio MA versus SPY. Specialty leadership centers on bitcoin and biotech, and gold plus real estate recover only in price.
