Sector Momentum: Two Sectors Broke Out
Sector Leadership Tilts Away from Growth
Defensive rotation defines the sector field as of August 28, with 7 of the eleven S&P 500 sector ETFs positive on 3M momentum. The 18.2pp spread is 3.9pp narrower than a week ago. The 2.6% median sits far below Healthcare XLV at 15.0%. Two sectors are in convex uptrends and three are accelerating lower, so the range narrowed because the top cooled and the bottom lifted together, not because growth leadership returned.
Healthcare XLV leads with a -0.46 correlation to SPY, so the top sector now acts as an inverse equity link instead of a growth amplifier. Financials XLF broke out at 13.0% after a +1.9pp gain. Its 0.26 beta leaves the advance low-amplitude for a cyclical sector. Energy XLE climbed 4.5pp to 12.2% and entered a convex uptrend. The upper tier mixes defense with cyclicals that no longer lean on high market beta, so sector strength sits outside the usual growth channel.
Consumer Staples Crossed to a New Range High
Consumer Staples XLP crossed into the upper part of its 1-year range this week at 3.8% after a +1.7pp gain. Its -0.28 correlation to SPY gives the move an inverse market link, and the convex uptrend shows that pace is increasing. A move into the upper part of its one-year range extends the defensive bid from the leader into the middle of the sector table.
Technology XLK turned negative at -2.7% after a -4.4pp drop and moved onto the breakdown list. Its 1.97 beta leaves the weak tail concentrated in amplified growth exposure. Consumer Discretionary XLY is -2.8%, and Communication Services XLC is -2.1%. Industrials XLI fell 2.6pp to 2.6% and crossed into the lower part of its 1-year range this week. Utilities XLU trails at -3.2%. Materials XLB at 4.4% and Real Estate XLRE at 2.0% keep the middle uneven. One breakdown and two negative growth sectors leave the compressed spread reflecting rotation away from growth, not a uniform recovery across sectors.
