Sector Momentum: Technology Leads at 13.9%

Sector Leadership Fragments Across Styles

A 20.7pp spread fragments the eleven S&P 500 sector ETFs as of July 17, with seven positive on 3M momentum. Technology XLK leads at 13.9%, and the 3.7% median places most sectors in a mid-single-digit band below the leader. Two breakouts sit beside two breakdowns, which leaves the field split across offensive and defensive channels. The sector map divides across style and macro pathways, and no single beta cohort defines the range.

Technology XLK was down 16.5pp on the week, and its 2.4 beta puts the lead in amplified market risk even after the reset. Healthcare XLV at 8.7% and Financials XLF at 7.7% form the rest of the upper tier, both easing less than the benchmark. The top ranks blend growth and defensives, which breaks the earlier one-factor leadership pattern.

Energy 3M Momentum Crossed Above Zero

Energy XLE turned positive at 5.6% on a +8.2pp move and became a breakout. Its -0.45 correlation to SPY gives the move an inverse equity lean, which separates it from the growth beta that dominated the prior leadership set. Consumer Staples XLP also broke out at 4.0% on a +1.2pp move. The upside now includes both inflation-sensitive and defensive leadership, so the sector advance broadens by style even as the old tech impulse cools.

Industrials XLI is 3.7%, and Real Estate XLRE is 3.0%, both positive but decelerating. Utilities XLU improved to -1.5%, while Materials XLB slipped to -2.2%. Consumer Discretionary XLY turned negative at -3.9% on a -8.0pp move and became a breakdown, and Communication Services XLC is -6.8% after a -5.0pp move and has been negative since May 22. The lower tier centers on consumer growth beta, which leaves sector breadth positive but internally defensive.
