Sector Momentum: Technology Leads at 30.4%
Defensive Decoupling Reshapes Sector Leadership
A 33.1-point spread defines the eleven S&P 500 sector ETFs as of July 10. Seven are positive on 3M momentum, and the median has slipped to 4.1%. Technology XLK leads the field, and Healthcare plus Consumer Staples occupy high ranks even as four sectors are below zero. The sector map blends one high-beta growth leader with defensive strength and cyclical erosion, so leadership is concentrated and internally split.
Technology XLK leads at 30.4% after a 2.6-point pullback. Its 2.02 beta makes the lead an amplified version of the broad-market move. Financials XLF holds 10.1%, and Healthcare XLV ranks just behind at 9.7% in a convex uptrend. The upper tier combines growth and defense, and only XLK stands above the broad-market benchmark, so the sector lead is steep rather than broad.
Materials 3M Momentum Turned Negative
Materials XLB turned negative at -1.7% after a 5.3-point drop and moved into a breakdown. Its 0.16 correlation to SPY leaves the weakness only weakly linked to the broad index. The breakdown isolates a cyclical pocket whose signal does not extend across the full market beta channel.
Industrials XLI fell 6.3pp to 6.3%, Real Estate XLRE lost 3.6pp to 4.7%, and Consumer Discretionary XLY dropped 4.4pp to 4.1%. Consumer Staples XLP holds 2.8%, reinforcing the defensive shelf above the negative tail. Energy XLE rebounded 6.9pp to -2.6%. Its -0.44 correlation to SPY leaves the bounce in an inverse channel. Communication Services XLC reads -1.8%, and Utilities XLU trails at -2.7%; its -0.55 correlation is a short-window inverse reading off a near-zero baseline. The middle of the table favors defense, and the negative tail includes inverse channels in Energy and Utilities, so sector rotation no longer reads as a simple growth-versus-cyclical hierarchy.
