Sector Momentum: Energy Broke Out at 14.0%

Cyclical Leadership Concentrates at the Top

Cyclical leadership narrows to two breakouts as of September 11, with 5 of the eleven S&P 500 sector ETFs above zero on 3M momentum. Energy XLE leads at 14.0%, the median is -1.9%, and the 18.2pp spread shows a wide gap between one accelerating winner and a lower half already below zero. The distribution is narrow and mixed, with upside concentrated at the top and four sectors already turned negative.

XLE added 2.1pp on the week and sits in a convex uptrend; its -0.47 correlation to SPY puts leadership in an inflation-sensitive pocket with an inverse index link. Healthcare XLV eased to 8.0% after a -4.5pp week, and Financials XLF fell to 7.7% after -3.8pp, so the next tier is positive but losing pace. The upper end depends on one accelerating leader and two decelerating followers, which leaves participation shallow.

Consumer Discretionary Reached a New Range Low

Consumer Discretionary XLY crossed into the lower part of its 1-year range this week at -2.9% after a -3.1pp week, and its 1.14 beta places the weakness near market amplitude. Materials XLB broke down at -2.0% after a -6.0pp week, and its 0.40 beta shows the drop came from a low-amplitude segment of the market. Consumer Staples XLP fell to -2.2% after -4.3pp, so the lower tier spans both cyclical demand and defensive consumption.

Communication Services XLC rose to 1.1% after a +0.5pp week, giving the field a second breakout even though its 1.02 beta tracks SPY at ordinary amplitude. Technology XLK slipped to 1.7%, Industrials XLI turned negative at -1.9%, Real Estate XLRE dropped to -3.4%, and Utilities XLU sits last at -4.2%. The field splits between isolated breakouts and a broad negative middle, so sector strength is selective rather than cumulative.
