Sector Momentum: Technology Leads at 41.7%
Growth Concentrates Sector Leadership
As of June 18, nine of the eleven S&P 500 sector ETFs are positive on 3M momentum, and six sit in convex uptrends. Technology XLK leads at 41.7%, up 6.4pp on the week, and the 8.8% median shows that most sectors sit far below the leader. The 50.4pp spread down to -8.7% leaves breadth positive, but leadership is steep and the downside tail is already open.
Three Sectors Reached New Range Highs
XLK has been positive since April 17 and amplifies SPY at 1.79 beta. Consumer Discretionary XLY climbed to 9.0% and runs a 1.32 beta, while Communication Services XLC sits at -2.2% with a 1.20 beta and 0.90 correlation. Growth leadership is narrow inside the sector map: technology and discretionary participate, while communications sits outside the advance.
Industrials XLI climbed to 12.2% after a 4.9pp gain and now runs a 0.48 beta, so the second-ranked sector is cyclical but low-amplitude. Materials XLB rose to 10.8%, with beta at 0.09 and correlation at 0.09, and Financials XLF plus Real Estate XLRE cluster at 9.7% and 8.8% on sub-0.6 betas. The broadening beneath technology came through cyclicals that shed market linkage rather than through another high-beta growth sector.
Consumer Staples XLP reached 3.0% and now carries a -0.20 correlation to SPY, while Utilities XLU turned positive at 0.9% after a 5.4pp jump and sits at -0.25 on both beta and correlation. Healthcare XLV is only 3.2%, but beta and correlation at 0.07 place it near fully decoupled. Energy XLE turned negative, falling from 0.4% to -8.7% over the week; its -0.68 correlation is a short-window inverse reading off a near-zero baseline rather than an established hedge. The lower tier now splits between defensives that add breadth by decoupling and energy weakness that opens a separate downside tail.
