Daily Tactical: Equity Leadership Narrows Into Growth and Asia

Price participation held, but relative confirmation stayed scarce

At the close, our equity coverage held up in price while remaining heavily benchmark-led. 43 of 59 ETFs (73%, +1.7pp) held above their 20-day moving average, but only 12 of 58 ETFs (21%, +5.2pp) outperformed the S&P 500 SPY, leaving a +52pp gap. Leadership remained concentrated in US growth, technology and Asia, while developed ex-US, small caps, low-volatility and quality failed to confirm.

Fixed income stayed in defensive rotation rather than recovery. Just 3 of 17 ETFs (18%, unchanged on the day) held above their 20-day moving average, while 12 of 16 ETFs (75%, +6.2pp) outperformed the Aggregate Bonds AGG, leaving a -57pp gap as credit, mortgages, inflation-linked exposure and short duration held relative ground against Treasuries and long duration.

Within specialty, price participation stayed high but quality deteriorated, with 13 of 15 ETFs (87%, -6.7pp) above their 20-day moving average and only 4 of 15 ETFs (27%, -6.7pp) beating the S&P 500 SPY, a +60pp gap. Semiconductors, clean energy and momentum retained leadership, while bitcoin-linked exposure and real estate weakened; commodities produced no fresh alerts in our coverage, though copper, broad commodities, silver and oil remain aligned across timescales.

20-Day Tactical Breadth

20-Day Tactical Breadth Chart

Key Takeaways

S&P SmallCap Growth SLYG, with a +2.98% period return, crossed below its 20-day moving average. That came alongside upside price crosses in Europe VGK and Consumer Discretionary XLY. The message is rotation inside equity, not a clean expansion of leadership.

• We treat the equity ratio signals differently. Emg. Markets EEM crossed above its ratio moving average versus S&P 500 SPY with a +1.89% 20-day return and already sits in cross-timescale relative leadership. China Large Cap FXI and Russell Growth IWF crossed above their ratio moving averages after -2.18% and -0.01% 20-day relative returns. That leaves them in early stabilization, not established leadership.

Mortgage-Backed MBB crossed above its ratio moving average versus Aggregate Bonds AGG, fitting the broader duration split: credit, mortgages, and short duration outperform, while Treasuries and long duration remain the rate-sensitive laggards. In specialty, Real Estate VNQ crossed below its 20-day moving average and Bitcoin Trust IBIT crossed below its ratio moving average versus S&P 500 SPY. Commodities still produced no fresh alerts in our coverage.
